Horse breeding in the Cetina region has a three hundred year tradition, based on a unique equestrian tournament, the Sinj Alka. This tournament ha sbeen held in Sinj since 1715 to commemorate the heroic victory of the population over the Ottoman army.
This honorable knight's competition of the Alkars in their age old uniforms, aim for a target - the alka, a metal ring while on horseback. The competition is considered to be a moving cultural monument, and the Alkars and horses prepare all-year round for this spectatcle which takes place before more than ten thousand visitors each year in the second week of August, and has been for the past three centuries. In addition to the Alka tournament, horce races and show jumping have become popular in Sinj and Trilj, while interest for various forms of recreational and competition riding has lead to the formation of equestrian clubs.
